Massapequa, NY – On February 23rd, The Tewaaraton Foundation announced the 2016 Tewaaraton Award watch lists for men’s and women’s college lacrosse. Included were three former FLG select players and Garden City products, Devin Dwyer (Harvard), Jackie Jahelka (Adelphi), and Stephen Jahelka (Harvard). The list is also deep in Long Island roots with 21 additional candidates named.
The Tewaaraton Award is the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy for NCAA lacrosse. The watch list includes 50 candidates for men’s and women’s lacrosse from around the country. During the season, the list is narrowed down to a field of 25 candidates and then 5 finalists are announced. A men’s and women’s winner will be announced on Thursday – June 2nd at the 16th Tewaaraton Award Ceremony held in Washington, D.C.

Devin Dwyer, Sr., Attack (16 goals, 12 assists)
Dwyer has recorded at least 43 points the past three seasons entering his final year of eligibility. He was named on the 2015 Tewaaraton Award watch list. Prior to this season, he was named Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America honorable mention selection. Dwyer scored the over-time winning goal at UMass on February 27. He tallied four goals and six points in a 14-9 victory over No. 4/4 Duke University which was played at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University. The Crimson are 4-1 this season.

Jackie Jahelka, Jr., Attack (16 goals, 3 assists)
Member of the 2014 and 2015 Adelphi Women’s Lacrosse NCAA Division II national championship teams. Jahelka, a junior captain All-American, finished last season 9th in the nation in goals (68) and 17th in points (86). After her freshman season, she received Northeast-10 Conference and ECAC rookie of the year honors. Since arriving on campus, Adelphi has a 46-1 record. Jahelka, who holds a 3.90 GPA in the Scholar Teacher Education Program, currently is a coach for the FLG Girls 2023 Nassau team and was a U.S. Lacrosse National All-American at Garden City High School.

Stephen Jahelka, Sr., Defense (7 ground balls, 6 caused turnovers)
The two-time captain has come back strong after suffering an injury during the 2015 season. Jahelka, an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America third team selection was also named to the 2015 Tewaaraton Award watch list. He was named tri-captain of U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team that won gold at the 2012 Lacrosse World Championships in Finland. Jahelka, who holds a 3.60 GPA in Economics, was recently selected 14th overall by the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) 2016 Collegiate Draft – the highest an athlete has been drafted in the history of Harvard Athletics.
